National Consultation on Child-Focused UPR Stakeholder’s Report

March 29, 2023 - Advocacy, UPR & UNCRC Mechanism Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK) organised the “National Consultation on Child-Focused UPR Stakeholder’s Report” in collaboration with the Child Rights Advocacy Coalition Bangladesh and Joining Forces Bangladesh. The event aimed to share the draft Child-focused UPR report which evaluates the progress made by the government since the third cycle of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) held in 2018.

During the consultation, speakers emphasised that without prioritising and ensuring the development and protection of children, Bangladesh cannot be built as a better country. They highlighted the need for proper implementation of the existing legal and policy framework, commitments made by the government in different platforms and obligations under the United Nations Child Rights Convention. The Chief Guest, Meher Afroz Chumki, MP, Chair of the Standing Committee for Women and Children Affairs, attended the event, along with the Special Guest, M Robiul Islam, Assistant Director of the National Human Rights Commission, Bangladesh. Representatives of several national and international child rights organisations and children were also present in the event.

The Secretary General of ASK, Fatema Rashid Hasan, welcomed the guests and participants, while Rasheda Akter, Child Protection and Gender Justice Adviser of Plan International Bangladesh, moderated the event. Speakers included Abdulla Al Mamun, Director of Child Protection and Child Rights Governance in Save the Children in Bangladesh, Nasima Akter Jolly, Secretary of the National Girl Child Advocacy Forum, Nishath Sultana, Deputy Director- Advocacy & Justice for Children of World Vision Bangladesh, Farzana Khan, Director of Programs at Educo Bangladesh, and Child Representative Israt Jahan Ikra. Tamanna Hoq Riti, Coordinator of ASK, presented the draft report, which discusses the development and challenges of the child rights situation in Bangladesh from September 2018 to March 2023 and provides recommendations to address the gaps and challenges.

The consultation provided an important platform for stakeholders to discuss and strategise on ways to ensure the protection and development of children’s rights in Bangladesh.
